According to the food chain, the dish of oven-baked chicken and tomato gravy with cream and butter was invented in the 1930s when the restaurant opened in Peshawar (then Pakistan) before moving to Delhi.
Daryaganj, on the other hand, which was established in 2019, claims that one of its family members, Kundan Lal Jaggi, partnered with Gujral of Moti Mahal to open the Delhi restaurant in 1947 and that the dish was invented there.
The Gujral family (owners of Moti Mahal) is demanding USD 240,000 in damages, alleging that Daryaganj copied Moti Mahal's website and restaurant design.
"You can't take away someone's legacy," said Monish Gujral, managing director of Moti Mahal.
